U.S. Battery Manufacturing, Corona, Calif., has added its exclusive XC2 formulation to its US 24DCXC2, US 27DCXC2, and US 31DCXC2 12-volt heavy-duty batteries. Most commonly used in lift and access, floor machines, RV, and Marine applications, XC2 provides higher initial capacity and higher total energy delivery over the life of a battery. “Most deep-cycle batteries for these applications are designed for light-duty cycling in Marine and RV applications, and not for industrial use,” said Don Wallace, U.S. Battery CMO/executive vice president.

When continually cycled down to 1.75 vpc., U.S. Battery’s 12-volt DC (deep-cycle) battery lasts more than 500 cycles, compared to only 160 cycles on the highest-rated deep-cycle marine battery. “We designed a true deep-cycle product made for heavy cycling, providing optimum performance in industrial applications. Now that we’ve added XC2, the result is an even longer lasting, higher performing battery, that when properly maintained, can save money and operate longer on a full charge,” added Wallace.

U.S. Battery’s US 24DCXC2, US 27DCXC2, and US 31DCXC2 12-volt heavy-duty batteries also feature extra-heavy-duty connector lugs, a tough polypropylene exterior case, and large carrying handles.

In recent independent testing, U.S. Battery products consistently outperformed competitors’ products in initial capacity, faster cycle-up to rated capacity, exceeding rated capacity, and total energy delivered over a longer life-cycle.  “Third-party testing, conducted without our knowledge, demonstrated that U.S. Battery products with XC2 outperformed our leading competitor in all these categories,” says Wallace.

U.S. Battery's variety of deep-cycle batteries are all manufactured in the U.S.A. and are distributed worldwide.

Acme Lift Receives Genie SX-180 Boom Lift

Acme Lift Co. has taken delivery of one of the first Genie SX-180 boom lifts, and the machine was immediately rented and delivered to an oil refinery in Houston, Texas.

“As aerial lifts continue to evolve, jobsite working height and work envelope requirements continue to increase,” said Woody Weld, chairman and chief executive officer of Acme Lift. “Up to now, no solution existed for the over 150-foot reach requirement for self-propelled aerial man lifts. Unfortunately, that high work could only be performed by cranes with attached or suspended man baskets in the past.” With machines like the SX-180, workers have a faster and safer way to reach extended heights, Weld added.

“Acme Lift will invest heavily to grow our new 180-foot self-propelled aerial lift fleet so that rental companies may have access to these units every day and everywhere," he said. "Because these new units are also relatively easy to transport, we believe they will become a very important part of the Acme Lift rental fleet.”

The Genie SX-180 boom lift is designed to be easily transported and is ideally suited for applications in the oil and natural gas industries, as well as commercial construction, industrial construction and maintenance, and general maintenance. With a 180-foot vertical reach and an 80-foot horizontal reach, the SX-180 provides a working envelope ideal for the most extreme access jobs. The 8'x3' work platform has an unrestricted capacity of 750 pounds. The 10-foot jib rotates 60 degrees horizontally and 135 degrees vertically to position workers and gear exactly where they are needed.

The machine is designed to be driven at full height. Travel speeds vary based on boom position and range from 2.5 mph with the boom in the stowed position, 0.4 mph below 125 feet, and 0.1 mph above 125 feet.

The Genie SX-180 boom lift’s newly designed chassis includes the patented XChassis axle system, which extends and retracts to provide stability on the job and a narrow profile for transport. The boom lift’s stowed dimensions are 10 ft. high by 8'2" wide. With a stowed length of 42'7", the 55,000-pound machine requires no over width or over height permits, allowing it to be easily transported on a truck.

New platform controls consist of toggle switches and fully proportional jib and boom controls. The ground controls offer an updated function diagram layout and tactile membrane switches. A 50-gallon fuel tank provides excellent run time and a 7.5 kilowatt generator are standard equipment.

Skyjack Quest 2013 Winner Found in Manufacturer's Backyard

Nearly 30 years after it rolled off the assembly line at Skyjack’s plant in Guelph, Ontario, SJ-006-10 serial number 00E was called back home to be named Skyjack's Oldest Working Scissor Lift. The unit was purchased by Kraner Electrical Ltd., a Guelph, Ontario, Canada-based company that provides electrical maintenance and installation for heavy industries, at Bolton Auction House in May 1996, but the machine dates back to 1985.

“Based on our calculation, the SJ006-10, still in use at Kraner Electrical, is the third Skyjack scissor lift ever manufactured,” said Brad Boehler, president of Skyjack, during a special ceremony in February at The Rental Show in Orlando, Fla. “The year this scissor lift left the factory, the popular movie Back to the Future was just released!” At the show, Skyjack presented Kraner Electrical with a brand new Skyjack scissor lift.

The 29-year-old scissor lift is generally used for installing conduit or fixtures, running pipes or hooking up equipment for Kraner Electrical customers. “When we are running electricals up near the ceiling we need wide spaces, and the Skyjack gives us lots of space while providing a steady platform,” said Matthew Kraner, co-owner of Kraner Electrical. “It’s like a work van up in the sky because it fits all our tools, pipes, fittings and the radio.”

The SJ006-10 reaches 21 ft., has a capacity of 750 lbs., and has a platform that’s 40”x82”, providing a sizable work area yet keeping the machine compact enough to make it easier to move. The scissor lift is easily maneuverable with two-wheel hydraulic drive and three forward and reverse speeds that are controlled from the platform. Its retracted height is low enough to fit through standard doorways. The machine is also equipped with an automatic, spring-applied, hydraulically released brake that is in action at all times except in drive mode. The hydraulic system, engine and electrical controls are easily accessible via a flip-up door.

“This scissor lift is a prototype, so it’s slower than the newer Skyjack machines we have,” Kraner said. “Everyone laughs at how slow it is because you can walk faster than it, but it’s a very effective tool, and I wouldn't trade it for anything. After all, slow and steady wins the race.”

In other Skyjack news, the company shared another milestone at The Rental Show: It has manufactured its 100,000th SJIII 3219 scissor lift. Chicago-based aerial lift supplier Metrolift placed the order for the machine, which it will donate to charity.

Snorkel debuted two new machines for the North American market last week at The Rental Show.

The Snorkel S3970RT scissor lift, which was previewed at Bauma, is now ANSI certified and available to order in the United States. Built on Snorkel’s SRT chassis, this compact RT scissor has a maximum platform height of 37'8" but measures only 5'10" wide and 10'10" long. With a lift capacity of 771 lbs. and a roll-out deck extension for extra reach, the S3970RT is ideal for working in confined spaces.

Suitable for rough terrain applications, the S3970RT has four-wheel drive, an articulating rear axle, 13 in. of ground clearance, and can traverse grades of up to 30%. Driveable at full height, standard features include automatic self-leveling outriggers.

Tthe S3970RT is powered by a Kubota diesel engine; but is also available powered by a petrol engine, LPG, or a petrol-LPG combination. A slide-out service tray ensures that technicians have quick and easy access to the engine. Additional standard features include integral fork lift pockets, lifting lugs and tie-down rings for ease of transport.

At the other end of the spectrum, Snorkel showed the ANSI-certified S3010E for the first time in North America. With a 10 ft. maximum platform height, the S3010E has a high amp/hour rating for an extended operating period between battery charges. With a gross weight of 1,091lbs., it is still lightweight enough for many floors with load-bearing restrictions. Measuring 30 in. wide, the machine passes comfortably through standard interior doorways. It can be driven at full height and has a skid steer system for a zero inside turning radius.

TM12 Celebrates 20 Years

Snorkel announced it has reverted the TM12 mast lift to its original product nomenclature for its 20th anniversary. The innovative mast design was originally developed by manufacturer UpRight in response to demand from Japanese rental companies for a compact and lightweight lift for working in tight spaces. Launched at The Rental Show 1994, it has since grown to be a popular product the world over, particularly in the rental industry. It was rebranded as a Snorkel product in 2010 and re-named the M1230E; however was still affectionately known as the TM12 by many in the industry.

The TM12 all-electric self-propelled mast lift can be driven through standard interior doorways and carried in passenger elevators, as well as lift two people with tools to a safe platform height of 11'11".

Snorkel has further enhanced the TM12 with a 20 in. roll-out deck extension, which will become standard later this year. This will extend the platform size to 4'10", providing additional reach without the need to move the machine.

Other Show Highlights

Also on display for ARA members included the A38E all-electric articulating boom with a new control system that is easier to troubleshoot.

Additionally, the EZ Loader series of delivery trucks for North America now is branded as Snorkel. These truck beds are specifically designed for transporting lifting equipment. The hydraulic ramp deploys in just 17 seconds, enabling fast and efficient loading and unloading.

Custom Equipment, Richfield, Wis., rolled out three new Hy-Brid Lifts push-around models at the American Rental Association’s The Rental Show in Orlando, Fla.

The new push-around scissor lifts are the models HB-P527, HB-P827, and HB-P1027. The first number of each model designation indicates the lift’s maximum platform height in feet, and the second two numbers indicate its nominal width in inches. (The corresponding metric designations are the HB-P3.6, HB-P4.5, and HB-P5.0).

The HB-P527 has a maximum platform height of 5’3” and a maximum capacity of 333 lbs. The HB-P827 has a platform height of 8 ft. and a 500-lb. capacity. And the HB-P1027 has a platform height of 10 ft. and 500-lb. capacity. For easy entry, the minimum platform heights are 20.3 in. on the HB-P527, 25.3 in. on the HP-P827, and 27.8 in. on the HB-P1027.

All three models feature a 22” x 37” platform with a full swing gate and non-skid surface.  The two-hand controls require the operator to keep both hands inside the railings while raising and lowering the platform.  The platform railings are designed to permit a clear line of sight for someone pushing the unit.

Designed to be virtually maintenance free, all three of the new push-around lifts use a single AGM battery to power platform raising and lowering, and none requires greasing, oiling, or other lubrication. The Model HB-P527 even has an integrated hydraulic pump and stack cylinder, so there are no hydraulic hoses on the lift.

The scissor stacks on all three models have oversized pins to reduce sway and need no greasing.

All three lifts feature large, easy-rolling 8-in. diameter, non-marking wheels. The front wheels auto lock, and the rear wheels are total-lock casters. The HB-P527 measures 26.4” x 41”, has a stowed height of 63.6 in., and weighs just 575 lbs. The HB-P827 measures 27.6” x 43”, has a stowed height of 68.6 in., and weighs 773 lbs. And the HB-P1027 measures 27.6” x 43”, has a stowed height of 71.1 in., and weighs 871 lbs. All three feature 0°-turn capability. Maximum floor loadings for a fully loaded lift are 141.95 psf for the HB-P527, 190 psf for the HB-P827, and 204.1 psf for the HB-P1027.

Custom Equipment’s director of marketing, Justin Kissinger, said all three of the new push-around models offer customers solid working platforms that are stable, offer excellent capacity, have a good-sized working platform, and are easy to move and easy on floors.

Kissinger said that low-level access lifts offer an extra measure of safety for users if they are matched to a job properly. He gives the example that if a user chooses a 19-ft. scissor lift for work in a room that has a 12-ft. ceiling, there is a potential for the user to be injured by being trapped between the lift and the ceiling.

“If, however, the user chooses to use a 10-ft. lift in that same 12-ft. high room, he or she will still be able to reach the work, but since the lift can’t elevate to the ceiling height, there is much less chance of  being trapped.”

“It’s important to match the right lift to the job,” Kissinger says.

The ARA rollout of the three Hy-Brid Lifts push-around scissor lifts, came about a week after the 10th anniversary of Custom Equipment selling its first scissor lift. The company started in 1981, making scissor-type mausoleum lifts for the cemetery industry. In 2004, it expanded into making scissor lifts to  elevate people and materials in construction and maintenance applications. Those lifts have now been its core products for a decade.

Teupen USA Inc.'s 2014 LEO Series will be featured in Silver Lot Booth 4581 at ConExpo/Con-Agg. In addition to functional and aesthetic changes to the product line, Teupen will introduce new machine nomenclature. The company says the LEO Series will remain as Teupen’s primary model series, but the nomenclature will change from a metric-based system to an imperial or “foot” model identification system. The new numbering system will be based on platform height rather than working height.

For example, the LEO 23GT's new nomenclature is the TL69A. TL refers to the Teupen LEO Series, and the machine has a 69-foot platform height and an articulated boom.

Additionally, Teupen USA will be showing a new model in the LEO Series at ConExpo. The LEO TL62A is a 62-ft. platform height machine that offers a 39-ft. outreach and a 550-lb. platform capacity. The fourth generation computer control and safety system features an interactive display and "coming home" function, which allows the machine to return to its stowed position from an elevated position using one button rather than multiple joystick functions. A new remote control system also adds functionality to the aerial lift.

During operation, the machine offers increased slope and approach angles, and sliding outrigger pads are included for easy setup. Newly designed and more easily accessible engine compartments add to the machine's serviceability.

Other models on display at ConExpo include the TL35A-G, the TL44AJ, the TL69A, and the TS76S. Options and accessories for Teupen products will also be highlighted.

Kohler’s new KDI Tier 4 Final engines were among the products on display in the company’s exhibit at the American Rental Association’s recent Rental Show in Orlando, Fla.

The Kohler 1.9-liter and 2.5-liter engines meet Tier 4 Final emission levels without using a diesel particulate filter, thanks to Kohler’s 29,000-psi common-rail direct fuel injection, cooled exhaust-gas recirculation, and diesel oxidation catalyst after-treatment.

An electronic control unit with fuel mapping manages the engine’s power output.

The Kohler engines’ efficient use of fuel not only lets them run cleaner, it also improves fuel economy and helps make the KDI engines Kohler’s quietest diesels ever.

An integrated turbocharger helps the engines produce up to 221 lb. ft. of torque at 1,500 rpm.

In addition to being visible on the Kohler stand, Kohler diesel engines were also on display as components of other new products introduced at The Rental Show.

In the Terex display, was a key component of Terex AWP’s new Genie GS 4069-BE hybrid scissor lift. The GS 4069-BE is the first model in a new family of scissor lifts that operate on batteries, augmented by a 2.4-kW onboard diesel generator which charges the batteries and also provides AC power outlets on the chassis and platform. The onboard generator is powered by a  Kohler 6.7-hp Tier 4 Final diesel engine.

In the JCB exhibit, a 2.5-liter, 74-hp, Tier 4 Final, JCB Diesel by Kohler engine was at the heart of JCB’s new 525-60 Hi-Viz compact telehandler, which made its debut in the at The Rental Show. The engine in the 525-60 Hi-Viz telehandler also meets the Tier 4 Final clean-air standard without a diesel particulate filter or selective catalytic reduction, so the emission system needs no service.

JLG Industries Inc. has officially unveiled its H340AJ, the world’s first four-wheel electric-drive hybrid boom; the new boom will be on display at ConExpo next week.

Combining diesel fuel and an electric power system, the H340AJ provides the power and durability of a diesel-powered machine while saving operational costs. Compared to an all-diesel machine, the H340AJ provides substantial fuel savings, is quieter (less than 69 decibels), and produces fewer carbon emissions.

“This innovative lift is designed to perform on par with its diesel powered alternative.  It’s an extremely hard-working machine,” explained Jeff Ford, JLG Industries global product director, aerial work platforms.  “The JLG H340AJ has four independent electric-drive motors that provide unprecedented rough terrain performance and relies on an environmentally friendly, Tier 4 diesel-powered generator for recharging.

Electric power is stored in eight 6V batteries, each requiring less recharging time than lead acid batteries.  Because the machine can run on all-electric power, it uses less diesel fuel than an all-diesel machine, reducing overall operational costs.

Customers also benefit from the H340AJ’s durability.  Whether in two-wheel drive (standard) or four-wheel drive (optional), the hybrid boom can operate in harsh environments, including muddy and rugged terrain.  A steel hood increases the boom’s durability, making it ideal for general contractors, facility managers, painters, and electrical contractors, among others.

In addition, the JLG H340AJ requires less maintenance – thanks to brushless AC motors.  The variable-speed motors operate smoothly and quietly, and feature proportional control.  When the operator adjusts the controls in the platform, the hybrid boom makes a smooth, gradual transition from start to maximum travel speed (3.1 mph) and anything in between.  The result is a smooth ride for the operator.

Direct AC electric drive reduces the number of hydraulic hoses and fittings as well as the potential for leaks.  Battery-only operation allows the H340AJ to be used indoors or outdoors and in other emissions-free areas.  In terms of access, the hybrid boom features a platform height of nearly 34', a 17-ft. up-and-over reach, and a platform capacity of 500 lbs..

“The H340AJ gives customers the power, durability, and versatility they need in a machine of this caliber,” Ford added.  “It’s not only the right machine for the job, but it’s also a cost-effective and environmentally friendly alternative to all-diesel machines.”

JLG Industries Inc. has introduced technology and styling upgrades to its entire line of SkyTrak telehandlers at ConExpo; all upgrades are designed to improve operator comfort and productivity on the jobsite.

One of the major upgrades is single joystick operation with pilot-operated hydraulics. This contributes to enhanced multifunction capability, and reduced operator fatigue. The intuitive, single joystick directs all functions of the main lift, telescope, and fork tilt, and so increases ease of use and efficiency of the machines. In addition, the redesigned cabs include an added armrest, three-way adjustable suspension seat, and optional air conditioning for improved comfort.

The upgraded JLG SkyTrak telehandlers also feature improved boom speeds for greater productivity. Additional performance benefits include a Cummins 3.3L Tier 4i engine, which provides plenty of horsepower while improving fuel efficiency and reducing the machine’s environmental impact. A redesign of the rear counterweight, which now includes a retrieval hitch as standard, increases the versatility of the SkyTrak telehandlers by enabling them to perform more functions on the jobsite.

Operators will also appreciate an improved braking system that requires less effort and reduces fatigue, and a new dash panel that provides better visibility of the instrument cluster and dash controls. In addition, most models feature the Stabil-Trak system, which provides fully automatic, rear axle stabilization by transferring from a 3-point to a 4-point stance for increased stability and operator confidence.

“These refreshed telehandlers retain all of the benefits that our customers have come to expect and love about our products – reliability in the field, low cost of ownership, and simplicity. But they are updated with current technology, new graphics, and a redesigned cab for added operator productivity and comfort on the jobsite, making them very attractive for the rental market,” said Brian Boeckman, JLG Industries global product director – telehandlers.

Operators can also expect enhanced durability and reliability from the telehandlers, thanks in part to Firestone DuraForce MH tires, which are less susceptible to sidewall damage and lasts up to three times longer than previous Firestone SGT tires. Stronger axles, drive shafts, and brakes also increase durability, while sealed bearings, conveniently located components, and a rear-mounted engine extend service intervals and increase machine uptime.

“What’s more, SkyTrak telehandlers offer lower total operating costs and higher resale values than other brands,” said Boeckman. “And they allow operators to choose from a wide range of attachments, including a truss boom and fork-mounted work platform, for a variety of applications in the general construction, bridge construction, energy, steel erection, and mining industries.”

JLG will have its SkyTrack 10054 and 8042 telehandlers on display at ConExpo. Visit them at booth #1037.

JLG Industries, Inc. has launched a new telehandler reconditioning program. The program is an extension of JLG’s current reconditioning program for combustion booms ranging from the 40-ft. class to the JLG ultra booms and involves tearing down the machine, inspecting it, replacing components based on wear, reassembling the machine, and repainting it.  The G10 telehandler is the first JLG telehandler available for reconditioning.

“JLG has very strict OEM guidelines that we follow for all of our reconditioned products,” said Todd Earley, JLG sales manager, used equipment, and ground support.  “Our customers expect the same quality from a reconditioned asset as they get from a new machine.  Our scope of work is very detailed, and our reconditioning program is very similar to our new manufacturing program.  In the end, customers receive a machine that has the same reliability as a new machine.”

“JLG is extending its reconditioning program to meet customer demand for stock equipment and customer-owned equipment. Over the past 12-18 months, we’ve seen an increase in demand for reconditioned assets, whether that be customer-owned or stock recons.  A lot of that is being driven by customers’ need to balance out fleets.  Now they have a better price point in the market, with a quality they would expect from JLG,” Earley said.

With JLG's reconditioning program, each machine is blasted, removing the existing layer of paint to take it down to the bare metal and then is primed and repainted.  In addition,  the company takes meticulous care in inspecting, replacing, and rebuilding components, such as the engine, boom pads, hoses, and chains as well as the cab, according to Brian Boeckman, JLG Industries global product director -- telehandlers.

JLG Industries Inc. has redesigned, from the ground up, its T32E Toucan mast boom lift as well as the X500AJ and X600AJ compact crawler booms.

Upgrades to the T32E Toucan mast boom lift include 80% fewer hoses and fittings than its predecessor, the E33MJ lift.  As a result, the T32E Toucan requires less maintenance and has fewer leak points.  The T32E Toucan also includes a direct electric drive instead of a hydraulic drive for increased duty cycles and greater operator productivity on a single charge.

With a 47-in. wide base, the T32E Toucan is suitable for warehouse applications and manufacturing operations with tight aisles. And with a horizontal reach of 14 ft., the T32E Toucan can go up, out, and over to access high objects on either side of an aisle.  The machine now has a faster travel speed (3 mph vs. 2.2 mph), the ability to climb steeper grades (25% vs. 20% ), and a new rotating platform (not available with the E33MJ).

The compact crawler, narrow and compact in design, can be used in multiple ways indoors and outdoors. The next generation of JLG compact crawler booms, X500AJ and X600AJ, have increased to 500 lbs. of unrestricted capacity throughout the working envelope.

The JLG X500AJ features a 56-ft. working height and 50-ft. platform height, and the X600AJ unit features a 66-ft. working height with a 60-ft. platform height, both lightweight for load-sensitive surfaces and ease of transport.  The addition of forklift pockets and lifting hooks on the outriggers allow for convenient loading and positioning in challenging facility applications.  Both machines offer a green lithium-ion battery option for quiet, clean, zero-emissions operation -- suitable for indoor and outdoor environments.

“Extensive upgrades will allow customers to better maneuver the machines, access more areas, and increase productivity on the jobsite,” said Jeff Ford, JLG Industries global product director – aerial work platforms.
